Due to its diverse geography, which includes hot summers, frozen winters, mountains, countryside and a coastline with extremely unspoilt nature, Portugal has become the setting for a wide range of adventure activities. Already consolidated in the culture and way of life of the Portuguese, extreme sports are highly appreciated in the country, and its landscapes are admired even by international adventure lovers, attracted by the local practices.

As a culturally rich country throughout its length and breadth, many destinations are sought after by Portuguese tourists to discover the local history and gastronomy, characteristics that are highly sought after by holidaymakers looking to explore new destinations. However, the search for landscapes for adventure tourism or ecotourism is also strong and growing in all regions of the country.

Nazaré Beach

Located north of Lisbon, Nazaré beach is famous for producing the biggest and most perfect waves in the world for surfing. Every year, during the European winter, several of the world's best surfers pass through the area and break records in the sport, enjoying its giant waves.

Nazaré beach stands out among the others in the region due to the presence of a submerged canyon. This changes the depth of the seabed and means that the waves produced on the beach don't lose their speed and have their direction altered, making them perfect for practising the sport. This geomorphological formation that sets the beach apart is called the Nazaré Canyon.

The beach is known as a centre for professional surfers who have the technique and experience to surf the giant waves safely. For this reason, it's not suitable for beginners. However, for those who haven't yet ventured into the seas but enjoy the sport, it is possible to watch the many athletes who frequent the area.

Berlengas Islands

The Berlengas Islands Archipelago is made up of small islands and coral reefs, located approximately 9 kilometres from Cape Carvoeiro, also known as Peniche. The islands have extremely well-preserved architecture, fauna and flora, which is why they attract many travellers interested in ecotourism and adventure tourism.

The Berlengas Islands are the most popular diving area in the country for amateur and professional divers. As well as being a region abundant with marine life, it also has trails of different levels of complexity, snorkelling, kitesurfing and various other sports that can be practised by everyone.

The adventure begins on the boats that take you to the island, the only way to access the archipelago. Many companies are responsible for guiding tourists through the local landscapes and offering tours according to the type of trip you are looking for. Although it's a small place, for those who want to fully explore the activities and landscapes present on the islands, a day dedicated entirely to the place is recommended.

Costa Vicentina

Internationally renowned for its lush landscapes, the Costa Vicentina is located in the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park. It is made up of deserted beaches and exuberant flora and fauna, spread along the coastline of the Algarve and Alentejo. As it is a destination known for its hiking trails, there is already a pre-established itinerary for tourists wishing to explore the region.

The trails vary in length from 6 to 20 kilometres and are considered to be of intermediate level. They therefore require some care and specific equipment such as hiking rucksacks, light clothing and appropriate footwear.

In addition, as it is an activity that requires many hours of walking, it is recommended that you wear compression stockings for circulation blood, especially for those who aren't used to hiking, as they can help with leg pain. It's also important to emphasise that for first-time hikers in the region, a local guide is recommended.

The Costa Vicentina trails are well known among the country's adventure tourism enthusiasts not only because they offer many opportunities to practise the sport, but also because they offer exuberant views, unspoilt beaches, small fishing villages and Portugal's historical monuments.
